WEB Du Bois was born a free man in his small village of Great Barington, Massachusetts, three years after the Civil War. Shortly after becoming the first black student to receive a doctorate from Harvard University, Du Bois began earning his title as the father of American sociology. After completing graduate work at the University of Berlin and Harvard, where he was the first African American to earn a doctorate, he became a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University.
